Practise what I Preach

The Starting Point

As a bootstrapped business owner I’m always watching how our pennies get spent.  If possible I try to get things done myself or with the help of our talented team.  These ladies can operate a drill just as well as a phone and keyboard.  Last week I made the decision to maximize our space and help curb noise overflow by buying some cubicles.  After a long search I found the perfect units on Craigslist.  The size. layout and price was perfect.  The picture of the units matched exactly what we needed.  I asked the contact “Are these units easy to assemble?  Are they marked and come with instructions?  Can someone who builds Ikea furniture assemble these?”  The response was “Yes, yes and yes”

We signed the deal and that day a truck was on it’s way.  At the end of the day all of the existing desks were broken down and placed in my office as storage.  A couple hours late the truck pulled up and the back door was opened.  Before my eyes were cubicles broken down into 1000’s of pieces.  My heart sank.

My husband and I loaded the office with the various parts filling up the whole room.  Managing my frustration and still hoping that there were instructions on the way I called the seller.  No instructions and no insert A into B labels.  We managed to build half of a cubicle the first night.  Ever the optimist I thought a good nights rest would make the project easy the next morning.  It wasn’t the case.

The moment of clarity…      Why am I not delegating this?

After showing clients how they can grow their business by focusing on the parts of the business that generate sales and allowing others to manage the tasks that don’t make you money I should have known better.  It’s so easy to fall into the rut that it’s cheaper to do something yourself than pay someone else.  The reality is that when you’re doing these tasks you’re not making money.

Thanks to my new friend, John, who we purchased the cubicles from and his desire to make me happy he was able to connect us with a great local firm that promptly arrived to build our cubes and allow our team to move out of my office into their new, well deserved space.  Next time I’ll leave the work to the pros and practise what I preach.
